Post by the Hawthorne Hawkman, photo from the Bike Cops for Kids blog.

The wading pool at Farview Park will be getting a $500,000 makeover and various other improvements will be made to Hawthorne's park this year.  A press release for an upcoming meeting on May 18, 6:30 at Farview can be found here.  Or you can read it after the jump...

Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to hold public hearing for proposed new wading pool at Farview Park

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) will hold a public hearing on proposed plans for replacing the wading pool at Farview Park on May 18 at 6:30 p.m., at the MPRB headquarters, 2117 W River Road. A Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting was held in March to gather ideas and suggestions from the neighboring community. The CAC helped determine the site of the new pool in the park and pool features to be included, and provided ideas and suggestions on options for rest rooms and other site amenities.

As part of its 2011-2016 approved capital improvement program, the MPRB has allocated $500,000 toward the replacement of the Farview Park wading pool and related site improvements. New water-saving and other updated engineering features will eliminate the plumbing and water seepage issues, which closed the 1950s-era pool last summer. Construction is expected to begin late this summer or early fall with the goal to have the new wading pool ready for the 2012 pool season. The current wading pool will remain closed for the 2011 summer season.

The wading pool and site improvement plan, which incorporates comments and suggestions received at the March CAC meeting, will be presented to the board for approval following the public hearing.

  1. Farview is not "Hawthorne's Park". As a community center with a gym, it serves multiple neighborhoods, and all of north Minneapolis.
It also hosts city athletic events, and other events, that draws participants from all corners of the city.
Other residents, not just from Hawthorne, may attend the meeting and share their opinions.

  2. Geez, MPRBE, good job of tossing a wet blanket on our support. Of course the park is open to anyone, but maybe you can go back and check the records to let us know how much NRP money was invested in the park from multiple neighborhoods in all corners of the city. The park is in Hawthorne and there is no harm done in calling it Hawthorne's park. What is gained by divorcing the park from the neighbors who support it?

  3. I agree with Anon 7:48. Farview Park is a great amenity within Hawthorne and I'm going to claim it as belonging to my neighborhood. In no way does that exclude anyone else.

  5. Anon 8:26, you are correct. Yesterday Blogger was down and I couldn't leave comments on any blogspot sites. Not sure if that's related.

I went back in the innards of my blog and those comments aren't there either. Very odd.

However, I do keep every automatically generated email of comments submitted tot his blog, so if these don't come back on their own then I'll repost them myself.
