Alonzo McCoy is off the Streets, Thank God

Post by the Hawthorne Hawkman, image from a website that frequently uses racial epithets and will therefore not be named or linked.

By now it's commonly known that Alonzo McCoy has been indicted in connection with the murder of Alisha Neely.  Not only was he among those who fired bullets into the crowd the night Neely was murdered, he also brought a gun to Neely's funeral and was charged (not tried due to lack of evidence) in the murder of Charez Jones.

Unfortunately for him, that's not the extent of his criminal record.  Here are several more reasons (GBT4P) that we can be thankful he's in jail where he belongs, and hopeful that he stays there until he's no longer a threat to society...

Isn't this delightful?  Looks like he assaulted his probation officer.

Overall, these four criminal cases might not strike fear into your heart, but keep in mind the things he's been involved with that we know of that he has NOT been charged or convicted of.  I still hope that Alonzo McCoy will somehow turn his life into something of a positive contribution to society.  But I also hope that a significant part of that process happens from the inside of a jail cell.

  1. And do we know where this delightful, young man lived? I'm just guessing, but I assume he didn't own his own home, so who made the decision to rent to him or his family if he was living with mom or dad or whoever. Unless of course they owned their own home and he was living with them.

If he did live in a rental, I certainly would like to know who decided not to do a background check or who decided to ignore that background check if it was done.

  2. So, what does McCoy's family think about this? Or perhaps he is one who has no real family. Getting conservative in my old age but i think that it takes two parents and a village to raise a child. Gotta start with the parents. I am just guessing but bet that the dad is no-where to be found in the equation. Does my stereotype hold true?

    1. He does have family and despite his background he is much loved. This is not how our family was raised to be. One person should not be a direct reflection on the entire family. I am a well educated woman, never been involved with the law and am a part of his family.

  3. So, we've got this young man with a pretty lengthy criminal record that pretty much shows that he doesn't learn from his mistakes or even try to change his ways, and we leave him running around loose? How shocking that eventually somebody died at his hands! Who didn't see this coming? Probation with terms that include staying away from a night club and not getting arrested again? Oooh, we're so tough on criminals. Of course he ended up murdering somebody.. and not even the person he meant to kill.
anonymous 9:03, I'm about on the same page as you these days. I'm sure this kid had a miserable upbringing filled with people who let him down, but when other people start getting hurt because of that, excuses mean nothing. Obviously this guy wasn't raised right. How about some of the people around here start thinking about their life choices? How great would it be if people could just stop and think about the fact that just because they are capable of having a child doesn't mean they should have a child... particularly if they are not emotionally, professionally, or financially prepared for such a thing. For that matter, if a person is too irresponsible to use a condom, it goes without saying they're too irresponsible to raise a child.

Around Northside, I've noticed that misery makes its own company, and then everybody else pays the price.

  4. I noticed that Alonzo McCoy is nineteen. If much of his criminal career happened while he was a juvenile, would it show up on a background check? (I suspect not.)

And, if you were a landlord and knew that the kid hanging out at your building was a bad apple, would you actually be able to evict the kid's grandmother, whose name was on the lease? Because it seems to me that without some specific evidence of criminal behavior, it might be difficult to do.

I understand peoples' frustrations about these issues, but I do get a little tired of the "it's the landlord's fault" meme. My guess is that Mr. McCoy had neither a lease nor an informal rental agreement with any landlord--but it would be interesting to know.

    Personally, I doubt you'd

  5. Whoops, please ignore that last half sentence--I should have hit "preview" before "post!"

Actually though, now that I think about it, it would be interesting to know the living status of people who commit crimes in our neighborhood. Do they have leases? If so, are these leases formal or informal? Do they "stay" with people who rent, or who own homes?

I wonder if the city or MPD has this information.

  6. To Anony 12:29

If you're a landlord, you don't always have to evict people who are causing problems. In fact, this is a HUGE mistake many landlords make. If your lease states either party can give proper notice to move (30, 60, etc. days) without cause (without giving a reason), the landlord can simply state in writing "This is your legal notice to move". They don't have to give a reason or go to court or anything as long as they follow the conditions in the lease. It's not an eviction, it's a simple notice to move out without giving a reason. You don't have to tell a tenant why you want them to move.

If more landlords would structure leases this way, they could avoid a whole lot of legal trouble when they try to prove a tenant is causing a problem. Housing Court always leans in favor of the tenant.

  7. Kevin, that is helpful information for landlords.

I have to admit I am still curious about whether/how the people who make big trouble in our neighborhood find places to rent, if they just stay with people who have places, or if they live in homes owned by gang members or their families. Or, other...

May try to do some research on this.

  8. A comment asserting McCoy's innocence (from what, exactly is unclear) has been rejected due to pervasive racial epithets and profane language.

  9. Meme: It's the landlord's fault.

    Pass it on.

Seriously, though, what's his address? Where did he live? And who owns the hellhole in question?

  10. John,

I have been wondering something similar, and let me give you an example: Two weekends ago, there was an article in the local section of the Strib about a guy who was arrested in St. Paul for doing a string of home burglaries - Gregory Felix Avent. He was reported as living in Minneapolis. So I looked up his criminal history and it turns out that he has literally been a career criminal. Minor and often major criminal convictions go back to 1972 (if I'm remembering this correctly).

The court documents show him as having a 55411 address, but give no further information. Who rents to Avent and scum like him? I want those names exposed.

  11. I am Alisha Neeleys aunt, and I would like to say that this is way bigger then any housing issue. This is a society that is failing our youth. Parents, teachers, police...the list goes on and on. All of these charges and this person is still running around on the streets with guns. Until people in poverty have options that don't involve breaking the law then everyone will continue to pay the price. The saddest part of all of this is the person who was standing next to him that night is the person who killed my niece and he is still out here, this doesn't feel like justice!

    1. The person with Alonzo was responsible for BOTH murders of the young girls. Alonzo is no angel but he did NOT commit the crimes listed against him.

  12. To Alisha Neely's Aunt--please accept my profound sympathy over the tragic death of your neice. And yes, this is a bigger issue than housing; the thriving drug industry and the murderous "alternative legal system" that goes along with it add misery to the troubles that always go with being poor.

But housing is something that we might be able to get a handle on. Challenging our neighborhood criminals, and forcing them to be both visible and accountable could help us all enjoy a safer life. I hope so, anyway.

Regarding Gregory Felix Avent, I found a 2005 address of 915 Sheridan Av N. That property was purchased in 2006 by Wesley K Yang and is a non-homestead rental today.

Interestingly, before the sale in 2006, the property was owned by Mattie Avent. An old U of M doc I found online (1955) features the following quote:

"Mattie C Avent as Clerk Admissions and Records May 17 to June 30, 1955 at the rate of $2,100 Term AT (husband James Avent Laborer Physical Plant monthly rate)"

Based on this information, I'm going to speculate that Mattie Avent was Gregory Felix Avent's mother, and that he lived with her (or at least at her house) up until her death in 2005, after which the property was sold to the Yangs.

Whether Avent continues to rent from the Yangs, or where he went after that, I do not know. But in this case at least, it looks like a "career criminal" lived with his Mom.

(Personally, I suspect that there are a fair number of career criminals, or budding career criminals out there in NoMi who live with their Moms or Grandmothers. So the "Who rents to these people?" folks may be a bit disingenuous in implying that landlords could fix all our problems with a simple background check on a tenant at time of application. But this is speculation on my part, worth only what you paid to read it right here on the internets.)

  13. The Avents lived there all of their lives and Greg was a piece of crap while he attended Lincoln Jr. High back in the early seventies. He was a societal reject from the get-go.How he has survived all these years without being killed is amazing.I did not realize he was still polluting the Earth with his presence and still creating problems for decent people. As far as who eventually ends up as a temporary or permanent resident at someones rented or bought house is a joke and cannot possibly be monitored to a tee by land lords or, for that matter, anyone unless a surveillance system is installed.I am not standing up for slumlords but they are not all slumlords either. The reality being is you can only hope to monitor and contain whatever problems as they arise but at times it is very hard to tell if somebody is living at any certain address for any extended time. That is why we all contribute our eyes and ears and watch any suspicious shenanigans that may be going on.WE WATCH, WE CALL and will bust your asses if you are trying to fuck up our peaceful lives.BET!!!

  14. Interesting about Greg Avent's background.

I often find myself in the odd position of defending landlords--despite their annoying politics, dismissive attitudes and questionable wardrobe choices, I don't buy the idea that they're responsible for as much trouble in North as many seem to believe. And the city's strategy of forcing homes into demolition strikes me as flawed. It's as if they believe that somehow the next owner will be better--but then the next owner is the same, or worse....

    1. Interesting, here we are just starting the year 2014, and the problem of slum lords still has nor been addressed. Just 2 years ago I fell prey to one of the worst that your fine side of town has(a bit of sarcasem for you Johhny). James Swartwood tried to unlawfully have my family evicted from his property at 25th & James. The reason? Because we wanted things cleaned up, the gangsters cleared out, and much needed repairs (insued from the tornato) taken care of. After repeated requests, that only managed to fall upon deaf ears, I called city inspectors to address the repair issues. That is when I was handed a eviction summons (by a women I found out later on lived with the property manager, illegal). Well I don't think Mr. Swartwood counted on us to fight for our rights. We obtained the people @ Legal Aid(The lawer knew all about this slum lord and had been battling with him in the couts for 30 years), our lawer was absolutly wonderful, and we won our case, and got the hell out of there. Mr. Swartwood could have been Mr. SMARTwood, but it's more profitable to rent to gangsters & dealers, as they don't complain about ANYTHING. When we moved in we had to literally BLEACH the intire apt., as it appeared to have been a supplier of herion & shooting gallery, there was blood stains sprayed up the walls. That slum lord was lucky to have a normal family willing to help clean up his property, but of course the evil root of money provailed. So in conclusion, these slum lords still need to be taken care of, and then maybe, just maybe we could run, at least some of the gangsters back to Chicago & Gary were they belong. The welfare is dried up here hoodlums, bye-bye.

  15. i would like to say that he has a huge loving and caring family. Both his mom and dad are active in his life... his siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles. He just decided to run the streets and hang with the wrong crowd. At this point there's not much the family can do except stand by and support him and hopefully guide him through this rough time in life. Now is the time for him to realize that the people he's chosing to be around is not a positive decision for his life. Yes, he is 19 years old, yes he was charged and dismissed on the murder of that boy, yes he is going to a trial for the murder of this young girl, but now is not the time for his FAMILY to turn their backs to him. So for your question is your stereotype not hold true? NO IT DOESN'T!!! Dad is around. Everyone must be held responsible for their own actions.... He was the one that went the wrong way.... Hopefully the jail system will steer him in the right direction so when he is released (maybe after a long time due to a murder conviction) he will be able to function the way society needs him to.

  16. Alonzo was a fairly normal kid with a nice family. Alicia was a nice kid with a nice family also. Alicia (Lee Lee) is missed terribly every day. This is the second time that Alonzo McCoy and Kenneth Dillard "accidentally" murdered a teenage girl. Lock them up and throw away the key! Of course, Kenneth is NOT IN JAIL again. So, I'll have to settle for locking Alonzo up for as long as possible. Ooops, maybe not. I heard a rumor yesterday that they are going to let him out too, due to lack of evidence. Come on MPD. We don't want these sociopaths loose on our streets murdering our children.

  19. I am a family member of Alonzo McCoy and first and for most, his father is an exceptional parent. He raises his children to be their own person and to think for themselves. What one does is not always a direct reflection of the parent. Alonzo made the decision he made as far as the company he kept but he did not kill that young lady. My deepest condolences to the family of Alisha Neely and I know this is late but I just stumbled across this page and felt compelled to say something. Alonzo is loved by every person in his family and we will continue to stand behind him through this time.

    1. Not that I regret writing this post or others like it, anon 12:10. But take a look at the date this was published. After a while, my blog took on enough of its own identity that this didn't seem like the kind of thing I wanted to write about much. You'll notice it's been a while since I went down this road.

I might decide to write more items like this in the future if it seems relevant or necessary, but I've focused on other topics for quite some time.

  21. fyi, he was freed & was seeing a girl up here in bemidji. when she took off one weekend, he ruined her house, broke every window & door & walls too include ceilings. ruined everything she had to include her young sons clothes & toys. he threw her food all over her house, hot sauce on the kids clothes & raw chicken on her bed. he basically has ruined her house & she & her son are homeless as a result. lets try to keep murderers locked up.
